About Wine Field Guide

A wine reference: grape varieties, types of wine and wine regions with clear style profiles, comparisons and food pairings.

What is here

779 grape varieties, 68 types of wine, 592 wine regions, 48 country guides and 280 American Viticultural Areas in our TTB snapshot. Each grape page gives the colour, the origin, the synonyms, the regions where it grows and the wines it makes. Rated grapes also carry a style profile: sweetness, body, tannin, acidity, typical alcohol, serving temperature and food pairings.

Where the facts come from

Names, synonyms, origins, regions and appellation facts come from Wikipedia and Wikidata, under their open licences, and from the United States Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau register of viticultural areas. Every page lists its sources at the bottom. Grape records link to the Vitis International Variety Catalogue.

The European Commission’s eAmbrosia register adds 1,650 active protected wine names. The register is separate from our regional guides: a legal designation may cover a region, a particular style, or several permitted names. We retain the Commission’s names and identifiers, and exclude applications and removed entries.

How the style ratings are made

The sweetness, body, tannin and acidity scales are our own assessment of the representative wine described on each page. Many profiles describe a dry table wine; some describe a rosé, an off-dry or a sweet style. Alcohol bands, serving suggestions and pairings are editorial guidance. A sweet Riesling and a bone-dry one both exist, so a grape profile cannot tell you the sweetness of every bottle.

How complete is the reference?

455 grapes have style profiles and 285 have original written guides. 111 regions have written guides. Other pages carry the sourced reference facts we have; missing fields are left empty. The catalog includes some table grapes, heritage hybrids and grape species from the open-data spine, and these are not automatically assigned wine ratings.

Our OIV planting snapshots are explicitly dated. Variety figures are 2015 observations from the 2017 study, which covers 75% of world vineyard area. National vineyard areas labelled 2024 include wine, table and drying grapes and young vines. Neither dataset should be read as today’s wine-grape plantings.

Dates describe successful source fetches. Rebuilding the site does not advance them. Our prose is original; sources for the checkable claims are listed at the bottom of each detail page.
