Bottle math

Glasses, ounces, standard drinks and calories, worked out from the bottle size, the alcohol and the sugar. The formulas are on the page, so you can check them.

Calculator

Read the alcohol from the label. Sugar is rarely printed; 2 to 4 g/L is a safe guess for a dry wine.

The formulas

  • Pure alcohol in grams = volume in ml × alcohol % ÷ 100 × 0.789 (the density of ethanol).
  • Calories = alcohol grams × 7 + sugar grams × 4. Sugar grams = residual sugar g/L × volume ÷ 1000.
  • A US standard drink is 14 g of alcohol. A UK unit is 8 g. Australia uses 10 g.
  • Ounces are US fluid ounces at 29.57 ml each.

These figures follow the standard nutrition values for ethanol and sugar. A real bottle varies with its exact alcohol and sugar, so treat the results as close estimates.
