Montenegro
A small Adriatic wine country led by Vranac reds, with Krstač whites and vineyard areas around Lake Skadar, Podgorica and the coast.
Montenegro’s principal wine landscape lies around the Lake Skadar basin and Podgorica, with additional vineyards towards the Adriatic coast and elsewhere inland. The large Plantaže estate is internationally visible, but small family cellars in areas such as Crmnica are another important part of the country’s wine culture.
Vranac is the red name most likely to appear on a first bottle. Krstač is a distinctive local white, while Kratošija is the local name for the grape also known as Zinfandel. International varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, widen the range beyond those principal indigenous associations.
Montenegro distinguishes protected designations of origin from broader geographical indications, with named areas such as Crmnica and Boka Kotorska and wider regional origins. A grape name and a protected place answer different questions. For a useful introduction, compare a dry Vranac with a Krstač rather than treating the country as exclusively a source of powerful reds.

- Read the stated grape, producer and source separately; a brand name does not establish a smaller protected origin.
