Sezão

Red grapePortugal

Sezão is a red grape variety from Portugal.

Also called Sezão.

The grape

Sezão is a Portuguese red grape whose older name, Souzão, creates a real identification trap. Portugal's national agricultural research institute distinguishes Sezão from the grape called Sousão in the Douro, whose principal name is Vinhão. Similar spellings on a label or in an older reference therefore do not establish that every record describes the same variety.

The Spanish name Sousón is also identified with Vinhão by Galicia's wine museum, so it should not be added automatically as a synonym for Sezão. Check the producer's exact grape information before comparing bottles or reading tasting notes across those names. A useful reference needs to keep this distinction visible rather than borrowing the better known commercial wine's reputation.

Sezão itself is a minor variety, described by Portugal's research institute as giving coloured wine from must with high acidity. That leaves much less reliable buying guidance than the familiar descriptions of Douro Sousão or Galician Sousón. If you find a bottle specifically identified as Sezão, use that producer's own sweetness, structure and serving information rather than assuming another grape's style applies.

BuyingConfirm true Sezão with the producer. Douro Sousão and Galician Sousón are associated with Vinhão and should not be treated as automatic synonyms for this grape.
