Boğazkere

Red wine grapeTurkey

The style profiled here is a dry, very full-bodied red Boğazkere wine: firm, dark fruit and spice. Typical alcohol is 13 to 15%. Serve it at 16 to 18 °C.

The grape

Boğazkere is a Turkish red grape especially associated with southeastern Anatolia and the area around Diyarbakır. Its reputation is strongly linked with assertive tannin, giving a wine that can feel firm even when it carries generous fruit. It is an important local variety to recognise rather than an unfamiliar spelling of an international grape.

Blending can balance that structure, and Öküzgözü is a familiar partner that contributes a different fruit and fresh profile. A varietal Boğazkere and a softer blend should therefore not be treated as equivalent purchases. Extraction, maturation and bottle age all affect how prominently the tannin appears, so a regional or grape name is only the start of the decision.

Choose a dry example with a substantial meal such as slow-cooked lamb, beef, mushrooms or a rich bean dish. Give a young structured bottle some air before dinner rather than judging it in an immediate aperitif pour. If you prefer very soft reds, ask specifically about the tannin or start with a documented blend instead of the most concentrated varietal selection.

BuyingFor Boğazkere, ask about tannin and drinking readiness. An Öküzgözü blend can be a gentler introduction than a firmly extracted varietal wine.
