Brachetto
The style profiled here is a sweet, light-bodied red Brachetto wine: sweet fizz, rose, strawberry. Typical alcohol is 5.5 to 7%. Serve it at 8 to 10 °C.
The grape
Brachetto is an aromatic red grape of Piedmont, most familiar through sweet, lightly sparkling Brachetto d'Acqui. Its floral perfume and berry fruit put it in a different category from the region's more tannic dinner reds. A red colour does not make it an automatic partner for steak, and its aromatic identity matters as much as the bubbles.
The best known sweet style is not the only possible expression, so the full bottle description remains important. Still wines and drier interpretations should be read separately rather than forced into the expectations of the familiar dessert-friendly version. Likewise, Brachetto is its own grape, not simply a red Moscato despite similarities in how some wines are enjoyed.
For a sweet, gently sparkling bottle, think of a modest glass with berries, a fruit dessert or a simple chocolate pairing, keeping the food's sweetness in balance with the wine. Serve it chilled and open it when you plan to drink it. If you want a dry table wine instead, confirm that intention explicitly before buying.
BuyingChoose Brachetto d'Acqui for the familiar sweet aromatic style, and verify the sweetness and level of bubbles on less familiar Brachetto bottlings.
