Also called Veltliner Frührot, Früher Roter Veltliner, Malvasier.
The grape
Frühroter Veltliner is an Austrian grape that makes white wine despite the reddish colour of its skins. It is an early-ripening crossing of Roter Veltliner and Silvaner, separate from the much more familiar Grüner Veltliner. Its long name is worth reading carefully because those similar words can suggest a closer identity than the grapes actually share.
It is often encountered as a relatively gentle, early-drinking white, with fruit and a softer outline rather than the most piercing acidity. Some producers also use historical names such as Malvasier, which can create another layer of confusion with unrelated Mediterranean grapes. The producer's exact variety information is more reliable than treating every familiar fragment as a synonym.
For a simple dry example, think of a light lunch, poultry, vegetables or an aperitif plate. Choose a recent vintage and do not overchill its quieter aromas. If you are buying because you enjoy a particularly crisp Grüner Veltliner, ask about the wine's acidity first: the related-looking name is not a guarantee that it will provide the same sensation.
BuyingCheck the complete name Frühroter Veltliner and choose a recent dry bottling. It is distinct from Grüner Veltliner and from unrelated Malvasia grapes.
