Godello

White wine grapeSpain

The style profiled here is a dry, full-bodied white Godello wine: full, stony, Chardonnay-like. Typical alcohol is 12.5 to 14%. Serve it at 8 to 11 °C.

Also called Gouveio, Verdello, other synonyms.

The grape

Godello is a white grape of northwestern Spain, particularly important in Valdeorras and other Galician wine areas. It can combine fresh acidity with substantial texture, making it a useful alternative to assuming that every Atlantic white must be light and sharply citrus-led. Its identity is separate from Albariño, even when the two appear in nearby shop sections.

The range includes direct, youthful wines and more ambitious bottlings shaped by lees work, oak or additional time before release. Those choices matter to the weight and aroma as much as the grape name. A producer may use Godello alone or in a local blend, so the final wine should not automatically be reduced to one variety's contribution.

Try a dry Godello with fish, poultry, vegetables or a meal with a moderately rich sauce, matching its body to the dish. Let a more textured version warm slightly in the glass so the fruit and savoury details become clear. A lightly handled young bottle is a useful starting point before exploring single vineyards or more developed styles.

BuyingStart with a varietal Godello from Valdeorras or another clearly identified northwestern Spanish producer, and check lees and oak treatment when comparing textures.
