Tsolikouri

White wine grapeGeorgia

The style profiled here is a dry, medium-bodied white Tsolikouri wine: mineral, apple, fresh, western Georgian. Typical alcohol is 11.5 to 13%. Serve it at 8 to 10 °C.

The grape

Tsolikouri is a major white grape of western Georgia, especially Imereti and neighbouring areas. Its name can appear on a dry varietal bottle, in a regional blend or behind the naturally semi-sweet wine Tvishi. That range makes it important to read the style as well as the grape before deciding what kind of glass to expect.

Like other Georgian whites, Tsolikouri changes markedly with the handling of its skins. A pale white and an amber wine made with prolonged contact can have different structures even when both finish dry. In Imeretian blends it may sit beside Tsitska or Krakhuna, each contributing to the balance rather than simply disappearing behind a single leading variety.

For a first encounter, compare a fresh dry white with a clearly labelled amber example if both are available. The lighter wine fits fish and vegetable dishes; the grippier one can accompany poultry, beans or richer food. A Tvishi bottling needs sweetness considered separately. Do not use Georgia or qvevri as a shortcut for assuming that every wine tastes alike.

BuyingChoose dry Tsolikouri for a table wine, check skin contact for texture, and look for Tvishi when seeking its naturally semi-sweet expression.
