Imereti
Imereti is western Georgia’s wine region around Kutaisi, particularly associated with Tsitska, Tsolikouri and Krakhuna whites.
Imereti provides an important counterpoint to eastern Georgia. Its own varieties and vineyard landscapes support a different set of wines, with Tsitska and Tsolikouri frequently encountered together and Krakhuna offering another white-wine introduction. Otskhanuri Sapere is one of the distinctive local reds.
Buried clay vessels are locally called churi, alongside the better-known Georgian word qvevri. Producers also use other vessels and techniques, so the term does not define every Imeretian bottle. Comparing a churi wine with a pale, juice-fermented white from the same area is a useful way to separate grape character from skin-contact effects.
