Žametovka
The style profiled here is a dry, very light-bodied red Žametovka wine: pale, sharp, the Cvicek grape. Typical alcohol is 9.5 to 11.5%. Serve it at 12 to 14 °C.
The grape
Žametovka is a Slovenian red grape also encountered under the name Žametna črnina. It belongs particularly to the wine traditions of the country's southeast and is associated with the celebrated old vine in Maribor. That heritage is an interesting part of its story, but a famous vine is not a description of every commercial bottle.
The grape often contributes freshness and a lighter-coloured red expression, including in regional blends. Cviček is one useful name to recognise, though it is a blended wine rather than pure Žametovka. A varietal bottling, if available, offers a different way to understand the grape without assigning all the features of a blend to one component.
For a light dry style, plan an informal meal of cured meat, roast vegetables or simple dishes that do not need a heavy red. A modest chill keeps the freshness clear. When buying a regional blend, ask about its intended character and grape list rather than expecting the old-vine story to guarantee concentration, ageworthiness or any particular flavour.
