Colchagua
Denomination of OriginChile
Colchagua is a central Chilean wine valley especially associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Syrah.
The broad Colchagua name includes inland vineyards, sheltered slopes and areas nearer the Pacific. Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère are familiar choices, but Syrah also has a strong presence. Apalta and Marchigüe are more precise names that appear on bottles and show how much variety exists within the larger valley.
For a practical introduction, compare a Carménère with a Cabernet-based blend from the same producer. The former can offer a different mix of spice and texture without being a sweeter wine. Ripeness and extraction vary substantially, so a valley name alone cannot tell you whether a red will be plush or restrained.
