Gimblett Gravels
Gimblett Gravels is a soil-defined winegrowing district in Hawke’s Bay, especially associated with Syrah and Bordeaux-style red blends.
The defining feature is the old bed of the Ngaruroro River. Gravel exposed by the river’s nineteenth-century change of course drains freely and stores warmth. That combination helps later-ripening red varieties in a New Zealand setting, making Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet-based blends particularly recognisable local styles.
Gimblett Gravels is a registered association trademark, rather than a separate government geographical indication. The association ties the name to specified soils and origin requirements. Read it as a precise claim about vineyard location and membership standards, not as a generic description for every gravelly vineyard in Hawke’s Bay.
