Wairarapa
Wairarapa is the southern North Island wine region containing Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton. Pinot Noir is its best-known grape.
The three principal wine areas share an emphasis on Pinot Noir, but the region also grows Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and aromatic whites. River terraces and the shelter of the Tararua ranges help define the vineyards. The modern industry dates from the late twentieth century, despite earlier attempts at vine growing.
Wairarapa and Martinborough are not interchangeable names: Martinborough is one part of the wider region. When choosing a bottle, the smaller place name adds location rather than a simple quality ranking. Pinot Noir is a natural introduction, while a local Sauvignon Blanc offers a useful comparison with the better-known Marlborough style.
