Rhône valley

Wine regionFrance

The Rhône valley links two distinct vineyard landscapes: a northern sector associated with Syrah and a southern sector where Grenache-led blends are prominent.

The north and south provide a useful starting distinction. Northern red appellations rely on Syrah, while Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne have important white-wine roles. Southern reds commonly combine Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre, and the permitted white varieties are also diverse.

The broad valley name covers regional appellations, village designations and individual crus. These categories identify different origins and rules rather than a single flavour or level of richness. Explore the whites as well as the reds: the Rhône offers aromatic, textured and blended white wines alongside its better-known red styles.
