Savoie

Wine regionFrance

Savoie is an Alpine wine region of eastern France, with local white grapes and Mondeuse reds providing its clearest points of distinction.

Jacquère and Altesse are useful starting points for the region’s whites. Altesse is associated with the Roussette name, while Roussanne appears locally as Bergeron. Mondeuse supplies a distinctive red alternative, and Chardonnay is also grown. These grape names provide more guidance than a general image of mountain wine.

The vineyards occupy different locations around the Alpine foothills rather than one uniform high-altitude landscape. Compare a Jacquère wine with an Altesse or Bergeron bottling to appreciate differences in texture and aroma. Savoie’s local grapes reward attention beyond the familiar ski-season setting in which its wines are often encountered.
