The grape
Alfrocheiro is a Portuguese red grape, often written Alfrocheiro Preto in references, with an important place in the Dão and appearances in other regions such as the Alentejo. It can contribute colour and ripe fruit to a blend, while varietal bottlings offer a direct way to explore a grape that is frequently hidden behind a regional label.
The grape can make a substantial wine, but balance depends on the producer's harvest and extraction choices. A deep colour is not a complete guide to body or tannin. In blends, Alfrocheiro may provide one part of the picture alongside varieties chosen for perfume, acidity or structure, so the finished wine cannot be reduced to a single component.
For a first dry varietal bottle, try roast pork, poultry, mushrooms or a rich vegetable dish, then let the actual tannin guide heavier pairings. Ask about oak if you want to notice the fruit directly. Comparing a Dão example with one from a warmer region can be informative, provided the producer's style is considered alongside the change in place.
