The grape

Bical is a Portuguese white grape especially associated with Bairrada and the Dão, where the name Borrado das Moscas is also encountered. It has a place in still whites and in sparkling-wine production. Recognising both names helps connect regional references without assuming that the different wording necessarily identifies a completely separate variety.

Its wines can offer fruit and body with the freshness needed for balance, but the final expression depends on harvest and cellar decisions. A young direct white, a more textured matured bottle and a sparkling blend have different purposes. Where it forms part of a blend, the producer's account of its proportion is more useful than trying to isolate its entire flavour from a mixed wine.

Choose a dry still example with fish, poultry, vegetables or a dish that wants a white with some substance. Give a broader version enough warmth in the glass to show its fruit. For sparkling wine, check the sweetness and maturation method separately rather than carrying the expectations of a still varietal Bical across to every bottle.

BuyingSearch Bical and Borrado das Moscas, then distinguish still white from sparkling wine and check the blend composition on the actual bottle.
