Bairrada
Bairrada is a coastal Portuguese region associated with Baga reds and an important tradition of sparkling wine.
Baga is the red grape that gives Bairrada its most recognisable identity, but the region also makes white and sparkling wines. Atlantic weather and the contrast between clay-limestone ground and sandier sites create different growing conditions. White grapes include Bical, Arinto and Maria Gomes, the local name for Fernão Pires.
A young Baga can have a firm frame, while producer choices and bottle age change how its tannin feels. Sparkling wine is an equally useful route into the region, particularly with the local roast-suckling-pig tradition. Choose by wine type as well as by region: a Bairrada red and a sparkling white answer quite different needs.
