The grape
Jacquère is the white grape behind many of the light, refreshing wines of Savoie in the French Alps. Apremont is a particularly useful name to recognise on a label. Its appeal lies in a delicate aromatic profile and a brisk, dry outline rather than the broad richness or strong perfume that might dominate a tasting of more concentrated whites.
A light body is a deliberate strength in this setting. It gives the wine a place beside food that wants freshness without a heavy overlay of flavour. The grape also appears in neighbouring wine traditions, but the producer's handling and vineyard still matter. Do not turn the Alpine association into an expectation that every bottle is identical or completely neutral.
Cheese fondue and other rich cheese dishes are an obvious local partnership, with the wine interrupting rather than adding to the weight of the meal. It can also suit light fish, vegetables and an aperitif plate. Drink a straightforward young bottle for its freshness, and avoid serving it so cold that its already subtle fruit disappears.
BuyingLook for a Savoie Apremont or a bottle explicitly naming Jacquère. Choose it for lightness and freshness rather than a powerful aroma.
