The grape

Refosco is a name that needs more precision than a single style score can provide. It has been used for a group of dark grapes around northeastern Italy, Slovenia and neighbouring areas, with Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso among the most familiar to international buyers. The additional words on a label help identify which grape is actually being discussed.

The regional wines can share a reputation for colour, freshness and a firm savoury outline, but that resemblance does not make every Refosco name a synonym. Refošk and Terrano also enter the wider naming discussion and deserve their own context. A careful producer's grape identification is more useful than reducing the whole family to one imagined flavour.

If you want a clear first taste, choose a varietal bottle whose full grape name is stated and match its structure with meat, mushrooms or a substantial vegetable dish. Check oak and maturation before expecting a soft, immediate red. Keep notes on the complete name when comparing bottles, or differences between varieties may be mistaken for differences between producers.

BuyingChoose a bottle that states the complete Refosco name, such as Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. Do not treat every regional Refosco or Refošk name as interchangeable.
