Lake Erie North Shore
AppellationCanada
Lake Erie North Shore is a southern Ontario appellation with a long growing season and a broad range of red and white grapes.
Lake Erie’s shallow waters warm relatively quickly in summer, supporting a long growing season along its northern shore. The appellation includes the South Islands sub-appellation, of which Pelee Island is part. Sandy loam, gravel and underlying sedimentary rock contribute to the vineyard landscape.
Merlot, Cabernet varieties, Syrah and Chardonnay offer useful starting points, with Riesling and Pinot Gris also represented. The region provides a different Ontario reference from Niagara and Prince Edward County. Compare the same grape across those appellations to understand how Canada’s Great Lakes wine areas differ.
