Niagara Peninsula
AppellationCanada
Niagara Peninsula is Ontario’s largest wine appellation, with diverse sub-appellations shaped by Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment.
The lake and escarpment work together to influence temperature, air movement and the length of the growing season. Their effects vary with distance from the shore and local topography. That variation underpins smaller origins such as Beamsville Bench, Twenty Mile Bench and Four Mile Creek.
Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Cabernet Franc provide useful starting grapes. Compare the same variety from a bench site and a lakeshore or plain site to explore the region’s geography. The peninsula name is a broad origin, so a smaller appellation can add meaningful detail when available.
