Naoussa

Protected Designation of OriginGreece

Naoussa is the northern Greek appellation for dry red Xinomavro, grown on the foothills and eastern slopes of Mount Vermio.

Xinomavro is the defining grape of Naoussa. It ripens late, making vineyard position and the growing season important to the final balance. The local terrain includes different soil types and exposures, so the appellation contains a range of expressions rather than one fixed level of tannin or ripeness.

For someone used to softer red wines, young Naoussa can seem firm. Food and bottle age can change how that structure feels, but producer choices also matter. Look for information about vineyard and intended drinking window rather than assuming every Xinomavro needs decades, or that every recent vintage is ready immediately.
