Nemea
Protected Designation of OriginGreece
Nemea is the Peloponnese appellation for Agiorgitiko red wines, ranging from fresh and youthful to structured and ageworthy.
Agiorgitiko is the only grape used for PDO Nemea reds. The appellation covers villages and vineyards at very different elevations, so ripeness and wine style vary across the zone. A soft, fruit-led bottle and a more tannic wine for ageing can both be valid expressions of the same grape and place.
The PDO is reserved for red wines, even though producers also use Agiorgitiko for rosé under other labels. Sweet red versions exist as well, so dry is not something to infer from the grape alone. For a first bottle, check whether the producer presents it as a fresh young wine or a barrel-aged reserve.
