Pfalz

Wine regionGermany

Pfalz is a large southwestern German wine region with a strong Riesling identity and a substantial range of white and red grapes.

The region extends south towards Alsace, with the Haardt mountains forming its western boundary. Riesling is a principal reference, but Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Scheurebe also matter. Dornfelder and Pinot Noir give the region an important red-wine dimension alongside its better-known whites.

Compare a Riesling with a Pinot-family white to appreciate the range, then explore a red from the same producer. Pfalz is broad enough that village, vineyard and producer information are useful guides. A regional origin alone does not specify sweetness; look for the stated style and the wine’s fuller description.
