Sachsen

Wine regionGermany

Sachsen is Germany’s easternmost wine region, with small vineyards and stone terraces along the Elbe around Dresden and Meissen.

Many vineyards occupy labour-intensive terraces, while the Elbe helps moderate local temperatures. Müller-Thurgau is an important early-ripening grape, and Gewürztraminer is an established speciality. Goldriesling adds another distinctive regional reference alongside more familiar German white varieties.

The area’s small scale makes producer and site information particularly useful. Compare a familiar variety with Goldriesling or Gewürztraminer to explore the local repertoire. Sachsen belongs to a different river landscape from Germany’s better-known western regions, so it broadens a German wine map beyond the Rhine and Mosel.
