The grape

Stanušina Crna, often simplified to Stanushina, is a local red grape of North Macedonia, particularly associated with the Tikveš area. It offers an important alternative to the assumption that the country's native red-wine story begins and ends with Vranec. Its reputation includes relatively pale colour and a fresh, fruit-led expression rather than only great density or power.

Producers have worked to preserve and renew interest in the variety, but the heritage story should not replace reading the wine itself. A red, a rosé and a particular house blend can present it differently. The amount of extraction and the finished sweetness are useful details, especially when the label is unfamiliar or appears under a regional wine name.

For a light dry example, consider cured meat, roast poultry, vegetables or an informal meal that benefits from freshness without a heavy red overlay. Serve it a little cool. If choosing a rosé, confirm the sweetness separately. A local grape is worth trying for its own character, without expecting the same structure as a darker, more concentrated Vranec.
