The grape
Touriga Francesa is better known on many contemporary labels as Touriga Franca. It is a Portuguese red grape closely associated with the Douro, important in Port blends and increasingly visible in dry wines. The name Francesa should not lead you to expect a French variety: its identity belongs to Portugal's own grape tradition.
It can bring perfume and fruit to a blend, often alongside the more forceful Touriga Nacional and other local grapes. A dry varietal bottling makes its individual contribution easier to notice, while a blend shows how the components work together. Fortified Port and dry Douro red remain different styles, even when their vineyard grape lists substantially overlap.
Choose a dry wine for roast meat, mushrooms or a rich savoury dish, matching the weight of the specific bottle rather than the grape's role in Port. If a floral, fruit-led impression is your goal, ask about oak and concentration. For a Port, use the finished category to decide serving, sweetness and food instead of relying on the variety name.
BuyingSearch Touriga Franca and Touriga Francesa, then distinguish dry Douro wine from fortified Port before comparing styles.
