Douro

Protected Designation of OriginPortugal

The Douro is the steep-sided northern Portuguese wine region that produces both Port and dry Douro wines.

The river valley is divided into Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. Those names help describe a large landscape with changing exposure, rainfall and heat. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and other local varieties appear in both the fortified-wine tradition and dry red blends.

Porto and Douro are separate protected wine names covering the same broad territory. A bottle labelled Douro is therefore not necessarily Port, and a white Douro need not be sweet. For a first comparison, choose a dry red and a dry white before exploring Port’s different ageing and sweetness styles.
