Verduzzo

White wine grapeNortheast Italy

The style profiled here is a off-dry, medium-bodied white Verduzzo wine: honey, tannic for a white, Ramandolo. Typical alcohol is 12 to 14%. Serve it at 9 to 11 °C.

Also called Verduzzo Friulano, Ramandolo.

The grape

Verduzzo is a northeastern Italian white-grape name most usefully read with its fuller identity attached. Verduzzo Friulano is particularly associated with Friuli and with the sweet wines of Ramandolo, but dry expressions also exist. It should not be treated as automatically identical to Verduzzo Trevigiano simply because the two names begin with the same word.

The grape can contribute more grip than a drinker expects from a pale white, especially when the production method extracts from its skins. Sweetness and tannin can therefore occur together rather than cancelling each other out. A young dry wine, a skin-influenced bottle and a concentrated sweet Ramandolo are different choices for the same general shopping category.

Establish the finished style before deciding on food. A dry textured version can suit poultry or a richer vegetable dish, while a sweet wine belongs in a smaller pour with an appropriate dessert or cheese. Read the producer's complete grape and production information instead of assuming that the word Verduzzo alone identifies one fixed taste or sweetness.

BuyingFor the classic sweet Friulian expression, look for Ramandolo. On other Verduzzo bottles, check the complete grape identity and whether the wine is dry or sweet.
