Azores
The Azores are Portugal’s Atlantic island wine region, with volcanic vineyard landscapes and distinctive local white grapes.
Pico, Graciosa and Biscoitos are protected wine names to recognise within the archipelago. The ocean moderates temperature but brings wind and moisture, while volcanic ground gives vineyard work a very different setting from mainland Portugal. Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico are important local white varieties.
Arinto dos Açores should not simply be treated as mainland Arinto under another regional label. Island and grape names matter here. Start with a dry white that identifies its island or protected origin, then compare a second variety if available; the archipelago’s wine is more varied than one generic volcanic flavour.
