Setúbal
Winegrowing areaPortugal
Setúbal is the Portuguese wine area south of Lisbon, known for fortified Moscatel and the wider peninsula’s dry wines.
The peninsula contains distinct protected names. Setúbal is particularly associated with Moscatel wines, while Palmela and the broader Península de Setúbal origin cover other styles. Castelão is a useful red grape to recognise, and Arinto and Fernão Pires contribute to dry whites alongside the Muscat tradition.
The flat sandy areas and the Arrábida hills are different vineyard settings. More importantly for choosing a bottle, the word Moscatel de Setúbal identifies a sweet fortified style rather than every wine made nearby. A dry regional red should be judged as a separate wine, even when it comes from the same producer.
