Lavaux
Lavaux is the terraced vineyard landscape above Lake Geneva in Vaud, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and closely associated with Chasselas.
The dry stone walls and steep vineyard terraces are part of a working landscape shaped over centuries. The UNESCO designation recognises that cultural landscape and its history. It is separate from the appellation rules governing the wines, and should not be treated as a bottle-by-bottle quality classification.
Chasselas offers the clearest introduction to the district. Explore wines carrying more specific place names, including Dézaley and Calamin, to see how the local emphasis on origin works in practice. The terraces matter both as agricultural infrastructure and as evidence of the long relationship between growers and the lake-facing slopes.
