The grape

Raboso is a red grape name of eastern Veneto, most strongly associated with Raboso Piave. It is known for the combination of acidity and tannin, giving a wine that can feel much firmer than a soft, ripe-fruited everyday red. Its reputation comes from that structural persistence as much as from any particular aroma.

Raboso Veronese is a related but separate variety, so the additional word is worth noticing. Producers also take different approaches to taming or presenting the structure, including maturation and, in some wines, the use of dried grapes. A general Raboso description cannot tell you the sweetness or production method of every bottle that bears the name.

Choose a dry Raboso with a meal that can meet its grip: braised meat, game, rich sauces or a mature cheese make more sense than an empty glass before dinner. Give a young bottle air and avoid serving it too warm. If you dislike sharp acidity or assertive tannin, ask the merchant for an older or softer expression.

BuyingCheck Raboso Piave versus Raboso Veronese and read the production notes. For a first dry red, ask about age, tannin and acidity.
