Franschhoek
Franschhoek is a historic Cape wine valley with a strong visitor culture and a notable inheritance of old Sémillon vineyards.
The valley lies southeast of Paarl, enclosed by mountains and threaded by streams that feed the Berg River. Its French Huguenot history is prominent in local names and tourism, but the contemporary wine range is broad. Old-vine Sémillon is a particularly useful route beyond the best-known reds and sparkling wines.
A cellar visit and a geographical origin are different things. Some producers based in Franschhoek make wines from vineyards elsewhere in the Cape, while others focus on local sites. If you want to explore the valley itself, look for the Franschhoek Wine of Origin statement and, where available, a named old vineyard.
