Hemel-en-Aarde
Hemel-en-Aarde is the wine area inland from Hermanus formed by three adjacent wards, especially known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The three names to recognise are Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. They sit within Walker Bay district and differ in elevation, soil and distance from the sea. Ocean cooling is common to all three, but the area is not a single uniform valley floor.
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the clearest starting points for understanding the regional identity. A ward name can add more useful information than the broad term alone: ripening becomes later in some higher sites, and soil structure changes along the road inland. Producer choices still determine extraction, oak influence and the wine’s final weight.
