Walker Bay

Wine of Origin districtSouth Africa

Walker Bay is the coastal wine district around Hermanus, containing the Hemel-en-Aarde wards and other distinct growing areas.

The district’s cool ocean-influenced conditions support Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, especially in Hemel-en-Aarde. Other sites grow Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and additional varieties. Walker Bay is the broader geographical name, while individual wards give a closer indication of the landscape in which a particular vineyard sits.

It helps to distinguish the bay, the legal wine district and the smaller wards on a label. A Hemel-en-Aarde wine belongs to Walker Bay, but not every Walker Bay wine comes from Hemel-en-Aarde. These nested origins describe location; they are not a simple league table of quality.
