Paarl

Wine of Origin districtSouth Africa

Paarl is a historic Cape wine district along the Berg River, with a broad range of red and white wines.

Paarl’s vineyards occupy the valley and surrounding foothills beneath prominent granite mountains. The Berg River is central to local agriculture, and the area contains some of South Africa’s longest-established wine farms. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinotage all form part of the district’s wine identity.

The wine route is a practical way to explore the district, but an estate’s tasting room may offer bottles from other origins too. Read the Wine of Origin statement if you want to compare Paarl vineyards specifically. Smaller names such as Simonsberg-Paarl and Voor Paardeberg give a more precise place within the broader district.
