Sardinia
Sardinia is an Italian island wine region with distinctive local names and traditions, including Cannonau reds, Vermentino whites and Carignano del Sulcis.
Cannonau di Sardegna is an island-wide denomination with more specific geographical categories, while Vermentino di Gallura belongs to the island’s northeast. Carignano del Sulcis provides another important red origin in the southwest. These names locate different wine traditions within a large and varied island.
Vermentino di Gallura and Vermentino di Sardegna are separate designations, so the shared grape does not make their origins identical. For reds, compare Cannonau with Carignano rather than assuming one island-wide style. Smaller traditions based on Monica, Nuragus and other local grapes broaden the picture further.
