Basilicata
Basilicata is a southern Italian wine region most strongly associated with Aglianico grown around the extinct Vulture volcano.
The Vulture area in the north is the region’s best-known wine destination, with vineyards around places such as Barile, Rionero and Venosa. Aglianico del Vulture DOC and Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG are related but distinct protected designations. The mountain’s volcanic setting is central to the local landscape.
Aglianico offers the clearest route into Basilicata, but the precise designation and producer still matter. Superiore is a regulated category rather than an informal tasting adjective. When comparing bottles, distinguish the appellation from broader regional labelling and allow the producer’s approach to maturation to guide expectations about structure and drinking age.
