Also called Listan negro, Mission.

The grape

Listán negro is an important red grape of Spain's Canary Islands, especially associated with Tenerife. It gives a local identity distinct from assuming every Spanish red must be Tempranillo or Garnacha. Its wines can show fresh red fruit, a savoury edge and varying degrees of structure, with a lighter expression possible despite the islands' southerly location.

Vineyard elevation, site and the producer's extraction choices make a large difference to the result. Some growers emphasise immediate fruit, while others make more substantial wines or distinctive single-vineyard bottlings. Volcanic scenery is part of the place, but it should not be treated as a literal tasting note or a guarantee that every bottle will share one flavour.

Try a dry, fruit-led Listán negro with pork, poultry, mushrooms or roast vegetables, giving a lighter version a modest chill. A firmer bottling can take a more substantial meal. If unusual fermentation aromas are a concern, ask about the particular producer's style rather than assuming that an island origin or local grape implies one approach to winemaking.
