Hvar
Wine islandCroatia
Hvar is a Dalmatian wine island where Plavac Mali reds and local white varieties such as Bogdanuša create a diverse wine identity.
Plavac Mali is closely associated with the island’s steep southern slopes. Bogdanuša supplies a distinctive white-wine tradition, while Pošip, Maraština and Prč broaden the range. The island therefore offers more than one grape or vineyard setting, despite the prominence of its southern red-wine sites.
Compare a Bogdanuša white with a Plavac Mali red to appreciate the island’s contrasting traditions. A named vineyard or village gives more precise information than Hvar alone. Ask which part of the island supplied the fruit when exploring producers, as a cellar’s address need not describe every vineyard it works.
