Jumilla

Protected Designation of OriginSpain

Jumilla is the southeastern Spanish appellation whose red-wine identity centres on Monastrell, also known as Mourvèdre.

Altitude is important to understanding Jumilla. The appellation lies inland from the Mediterranean, and higher vineyards can experience cooler conditions and a substantial day-to-night temperature change. Limestone-rich soils retain limited rainfall, helping support a tradition of dry-farmed vines in a notably arid setting.

Monastrell is the natural first grape to try, but wine weight depends on site, picking and extraction as well as on the regional climate. A dense, oaked red and a fresher interpretation can share the same origin. The name Jumilla therefore gives context without fixing one recipe for every producer.
