La Mancha

Protected Designation of OriginSpain

La Mancha is the large central Spanish wine appellation associated with Airén whites, Cencibel reds and a growing variety of other grapes.

The elevated central plateau has long, sunny summers, cold winters and limited rainfall. Airén is an important local white grape, while Cencibel is the regional name for Tempranillo. The appellation covers vineyards in several provinces, so its scale should not be mistaken for a single homogeneous vineyard landscape.

The broad origin includes different wine types and production approaches. A simple young Airén, a barrel-aged Tempranillo and a sparkling wine can all come from the area. Look at the specific grape and wine category to choose a style, rather than judging a bottle solely by the region’s historic reputation for volume.
