Luján de Cuyo

Geographical IndicationArgentina

Luján de Cuyo is a historic Mendoza vineyard area whose best-known wines are Malbec. Its DOC is a more specific claim than the place name alone.

Old Malbec vineyards are central to the identity of Luján de Cuyo. Districts such as Agrelo, Las Compuertas and Perdriel have their own sites and producers, and their soils are not identical. The area also grows Cabernet Sauvignon and other varieties, even though Malbec provides the clearest point of reference.

Look carefully at the wording on a label. A geographical origin identifies where grapes came from; a Luján de Cuyo DOC wine additionally follows the denomination’s own conditions. It is useful to distinguish the broad district from that regulated Malbec designation rather than assuming every local bottle makes the same claim.
