Mendoza
Mendoza is Argentina’s principal wine province, spanning old vineyard districts near the city and higher sites along the Andes.
Mendoza is a large origin, not one continuous vineyard or one style of Malbec. Its principal areas include the Uco Valley, Luján de Cuyo and Maipú, with additional vineyards in the north, east and south. Mountain water, dry weather and differences in altitude are fundamental to understanding the province.
A bottle labelled simply Mendoza may combine fruit from several of these areas. A smaller district name gives a more precise origin, but does not by itself establish quality. Malbec is the obvious first grape to explore; Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sémillon and local Bonarda show how much more the province grows.
