Patagonia

Winegrowing areaArgentina

Argentine Patagonia is a broad southern wine area, ranging from established river valleys in Río Negro and Neuquén to much smaller vineyards farther south.

Patagonia is a regional umbrella, not a single vineyard environment. Northern river valleys contain the longest-established commercial areas, while vineyards in Chubut and near the Andes explore colder conditions. Latitude, wind and the availability of water are more useful explanations here than the high-altitude model associated with Mendoza.

Pinot Noir is a familiar entry point, but Malbec, Merlot and Chardonnay also matter, alongside Riesling and Sémillon in older Río Negro vineyards. Read the province and district where available. A wine from San Patricio del Chañar and one from an Andean site in Chubut can share the Patagonian name while growing in quite different conditions.
