Burgenland
Burgenland is Austria’s eastern wine region, with important red-wine districts and a celebrated tradition of sweet wines around Lake Neusiedl.
Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt provide two useful red-wine reference points. The region includes several smaller origins with distinct identities, including Mittelburgenland, Leithaberg and Neusiedlersee. Rust has its own long association with Ausbruch, while the lake-side districts also produce other late-harvest and botrytised styles.
A Burgenland label can cover a wider range of grapes and styles than a specific DAC. Read the smaller origin when available, especially when comparing a Blaufränkisch with Zweigelt or a dry white with a sweet wine. The regional name alone does not imply sweetness, even near the lake.
