Kremstal

DAC wine regionAustria

Kremstal is a Lower Austrian wine region around Krems on the Danube, with dry Grüner Veltliner and Riesling its defining wines.

The region covers vineyards around Krems, both rocky sites near Stein and areas with deeper loess farther east. The Danube helps moderate temperatures, while cooler air from the Waldviertel meets warmer influences from the east. These differences give growers several distinct settings for the same two leading white grapes.

Kremstal DAC is the origin to recognise on the label. Grüner Veltliner offers one route into the region; Riesling offers another, often from stonier sites. Compare like-for-like wines rather than treating a neighbouring region’s fame as a ranking, because vineyard position, harvest choices and ageing can be more informative than a broad regional comparison.
